Kali, Ko & Mo Face The World Together

A woman and girl were out for a walk on the road near their home in the country. In the distance, they saw an expensive car pull over in front of a country church. A woman got out, pulled a box out of the car, walked a few feet away, turned the box over to dump the contents, and returned to the car (with the box). The woman in the expensive car with a now-empty box drove away, heedless of the calls from the first woman and girl, who were now running to the scene.

They knew what they would find.

Three Beautiful Kittens

They were beautiful, and yet, the box had been more important to the woman in the expensive car.

The woman and girl carried them back to their house, made a nest for them under the front porch, and made a few calls. They couldn’t keep them. They hoped to find a friend who would. They found a friend who found a friend who agreed to make the drive (about a half hour) to see if maybe one could be folded into her household.

She arrived to find them tumbling around the yard, playing hard with one another. They stopped long enough to sit down and look up. They were in a line. Two beautiful dilute calico girls and a very handsome long-haired gray boy. They were named Kali, Ko and Mo, and of course that friend of a friend took all three.

Locked In The Bathroom Together

To bring them into the house, we started slow. They were locked in the bathroom (it’s a very big room) with litter, food and water. Almost the first thing Mo did was search out a spot – it was a floor register that would allow water to drain away – and squiggle his little butt down in preparation to pee. He was shocked to find himself whisked up and placed in the litter pan, but he did his business, and the rest is history. Three kittens learned within the first five minutes in their new home that poo-ing and pee-ing had a place.

Eventually, after check-ups, shots, and a couple of weeks of sniffing under the door, they were allowed into the whole house, and the whole house was never the same.

There was not a single spot in the house that wasn’t fair game for a pile of three kittens. They napped in every chair, in the bed, in every sunbeam, under every Christmas tree.

Let’s talk about Christmas. Every year, they would receive – for their very own use – a garland that went on the floor instead of on the tree. The three of them would work with that garland, moving it around on the floor, stopping, sitting, communicating with one another, moving it again… It went from room to room, down the stairs and up the stairs and down again.

Mo, who had become a big boy, chose the smallest Christmas tree to climb. The girls, also big, liked the largest one.

They Did Everything Together

Everything. They snuggled together during the day, slept together at night, played with their toys together, tried to stick three heads into one food dish or one water dish. (I got bigger dishes.)

Mo was the youngest, based on his personality, and he demanded special attention from his siblings. They would lick him all over, at least once a day, paying particular attention to the little round things that were growing on his underside. (When Mo was fixed, until the day he died, he would, on occasion, gaze at that space as if to say, “Where did they go?”)

They ignored their siblings, Tiger Lily and Little Socks, but they loved their cousin, Daphne, the big farm dog, who spent a great deal of time in the house. (Instead of at her own house down the road.)

As they got older, they changed, but some things remained the same. They might not sleep together during the day, but they still did at night. Kali and Ko learned to speak cat (meows, etc.), but Mo never advanced past their secret kitten language.

All Things Must End

Kali, Ko and Mo remain vibrant characters in the cozy mystery series, Tiger Lily’s Café, but… things change. Mo only lived to the age of five. Ko just left us a few months ago, at the age of 17. Kali is still with us, but I have to wonder sometimes what she thinks about having been abandoned by her litter mates. She is surrounded by other cats, but it can’t be the same.

Mattie Explains How A Safe House Works

Hi I’m Mattie I’m the youngest I’m special I’m beautiful everyone in the house knows it and if they don’t then I chase them around did I say I’m beautiful?

Mattie Meets Mommy

Mommy said she saw a picture of my pretty face on Facebook so she ran to the PAC and said she wanted me and the PAC said she could have me but first they had to get me fixed and they had to shave me because I was just a big ball of mats and no one could get rid of them and the only thing to do was shave me and I was too squiggly so they had to do it when they put me to sleep to fix me so Mommy left and I didn’t think I would see her again and then she came back and she put me in this carrier thing and she didn’t care that I was bald naked.

Oh I forgot it was really cold winter and snow and ice and all kinds of bad things for a baby kitty like me to be losted so it was nice to be in the warm PAC but I wanted a better nicer place.

Mattie Comes Home With Mommy

So we got home and Mommy took me to this big room it was lots bigger than the cage I had been in and there was a big window with steps to get up to the ledge and steps to get up a couple of other places and litter – I already knew how to use that – and food and water and a door that had cat paws underneath it and I could smell several cats but I only saw the paws under the door for the longest time and  Mommy had this chair in the room and a tall desk and other things and she would spend a lot of time with me and sleep with me in the room overnight and sometimes she let some of the other cats in especially at night so they wouldn’t think she didn’t love them and I got to know those cats a little bit and it was okay.

Mommy said I was in the room to keep me safe and to keep the other cats safe and everyone would be safe and we would get to know one another slow and steady and I would never be hungry or thirsty or cold again and now I had a family.

Mattie Takes Over The House

So eventually Mommy opened the door and let me come out and she only let me go in the upstairs rooms for a while because she would put me back in the room and shut the door but stay with me lots and let a cat or two visit at a time and then eventually she let me go downstairs too but then put me back in the room and she was saying she was keeping me safe but I wasn’t sure because whenever I got out I could hide under all kinds of things and she couldn’t find me and she said it scared her that she wouldn’t find me and I would get lost in the house or something and wouldn’t know where to get the food or something and anyway eventually she opened the door and let me out for all the time and I’m in charge of my own life now and she picks me up several times a day to tell me how beautiful I am and this is how a safe house works.

This is a Tiger Lily Approved Tale And Boy Can Mattie Tell A Tale.

Little Socks Declares Her Freedom

Yesterday, we had pretend fireworks and thought patriotic thoughts. We had traditional Fourth of July food: hot dogs, baked beans and potato salad, strawberry shortcake and homemade lemonade. We celebrated the birth of our country and our freedom from Great Britain.

Freedom

I’m not sure what they were declaring freedom from, except taxes. They didn’t like taxes. But they made taxes of their own. And I hear people argue about taxes all the time. Maybe we need to have another tea party, like they had in this town called Boston. They had it on a boat in a harbor – that’s water, for those of you that don’t know. Apparently they needed a lot of water to make that tea. That was a long time ago, nearly 250 years. I don’t think Mom was born yet.

A lot has changed since that tea party – it’s a really good story but I forget the punch line – like the hot dogs. I don’t think they had hot dogs back then. At least, not in Boston. They didn’t even have baked beans in Boston, and that’s pretty strange, because there is this dish called Boston Baked Beans. You use bacon and onions and molasses and ketchup and dry mustard and this stuff called Worcestershire sauce. And beans. Don’t forget the beans.

Anyway, if we had a tea party, maybe we would all get along. Mom just laughed out loud when I said that. I don’t know why.

Back To The Food

Mom said they had some versions of potato salad then. Some Spanish explorers boiled potatoes in wine or vinegar and spices (ick), and then the Germans brought their version over here, maybe to that harbor in Boston.

Believe it or not, they already had strawberry shortcake and lemonade, too. It was the hot dogs and baked beans that they lacked.

So we had hot dogs, grilled outside, then put inside a bun, with ketchup and mustard and pickle relish and chopped onions. And I’m pretty sure the beans we had were the Boston kind. The potato salad was Mom’s favorite. It had boiled – or deviled – eggs and celery and dill pickles and dill. And something Mom calls mayo. She always says don’t use Miracle Whip. Whatever that means.

And the strawberries were the best in the world, with a biscuit called shortbread and whipped cream. That’s my favorite. I could care less about the rest of it, but I wanted the whipped cream.

So Back To The Freedom

Apparently after that tea party, they had a war. That wasn’t very nice. But then we were free. Free to do what? Work hard at putting everything back together again, I guess. But that brings me to my point. The point of all of this.

I, Little Socks Kitty Kat, Declare My Freedom From Everything.

I declare my freedom to stay away from people who don’t care to keep other people safe.

I declare my freedom to say that I like cats of every size and shape and color and gender. I even declare my freedom to say I like dogs.

I declare my freedom to say that I will not be mean to anyone. Well, unless they deserve it, and sometimes Mr. Bean deserves it.

I declare my freedom to have food and water whenever I want it. And not just any food and water. Healthy food and clean water.

I declare my freedom to have clean air.

I declare my freedom to have enough money to have a roof, walls, a floor, windows with sunshine, and boxes. Lots of boxes. And soft beds.

And I declare freedom from taxes! (But Mom can’t. She has to pay hers.)

Anyway, Mom says that’s why we celebrate the 4th of July, so we can be free to be decent human beings. Or kitty kats.

In Closing

I just hope that everyone, everywhere, can declare the same freedoms as me some day. Happy Fourth!

Toys For The Most Discriminating Felines

In my house, we have plenty of toys, and in the main, my cats agree with the websites that I will quote.  Toys are a great way for cats to stay healthy, both mentally and physically. My cats like balls, bells, little mousies, string, wine bottle corks, catnip-stuffed toys. But…

…My Cats’ Favorite Toys…

… are boxes. Boxes to sit inside, to sit on top of, to use as a tent, to use as a hiding place. They last until Sassy Pants decides to pee….

Other cats are more high-maintenance.

Fun For All

From this site comes a list. Of course. The toys are described, but not how the cats will play. The cats will  know how, but if you need a refresher, check the site. It’s fun!

Interactive Puzzle: Get a shoebox, your cats’ favorite toys and some treats. Cut a variety of different-sized holes in the box, fill it, and secure the lid with tape.

Feather and String: These can be purchased very inexpensively at a number of places, or you can make your own with a stick, a string, and a feather, ball or bell. This game is perfect for cats with a lot of energy.

Fetch: Play fetch with your kitten by tossing a catnip-filled toy. You might get lucky, and the toy may be returned to you!

Hide-and-Seek: A game like hide-and-seek will also unleash the predatory nature of cats. Hide behind a couch, desk, or bed. Your kitten will stalk you as though you were their prey.

Paper Bag: turn an empty, brown-paper shopping bag into a favorite toy just by laying it on its side. You can add to the fun by scratching or poking at the bag while your cat is inside.

Crumpled Paper: Crush a piece of paper into a ball that can be rolled across the floor. It’s mobile and it makes a great sound!

Laser Pointer: Any cheap laser pointed is worth hours of fun for both human and cat.

Electronic Games

Another site went digital.

YouTube Games: These are most fun with a tablet that can lie flat on a surface, allowing a cat to sit beside it or on top of it. There are several games. Inside YouTube, search “cat game with a surprise inside.”

Remote Control Car: Pet shops will have inexpensive remote control cars. Make it into a hunting game; pretend the car is a mouse.

In Closing

Experts recommend that you play with your cats two to three times per week, just to keep them alert, active and engaged.

June 4 Was Hug Your Cat Day. Did You?

If you don’t have a cat to hug, please don’t feel left out. Although, if you read these blogs and you don’t have a cat, you probably already feel left out. But if you do have a cat (or a few), you would know that you don’t need a special day set aside for hugging cats.

And what do cats have to say about it?

Tiger Lily

We have been worshipped for thousands of years. You’ll worship us for thousands of years more. Hugs? They’re okay, but give me a ray of sunshine any day.

Little Socks

I prefer that you let me choose, please, and I choose to sleep on your chest at night. Oh, here. Let me lower my head and tickle your face with my whiskers. What? You were sleeping?

Kali, Ko & Mo

Kali: Pick me up and put me on your shoulder. No, not that shoulder. The other one. Yes. That’s it. Pets from top of head to tip of tail, please.

Ko: Let me climb on your lap. Pet the top of my head, please.

Mo: Ignore them. Here, let me move everyone out of the way. Yes, leave your hand right there.

Sassy Pants

You see dis big spot on my tummy? Dat’s what you aims for. I turns over an squiggles on my back an you has to take your han an rubs me an tickles me on dat big spot. Right dere. Got it?

Mr. Bean

When it’s my turn for hugs, don’t even look at another cat. And you have to kiss me on the mouth. If you don’t, or if you don’t kiss me long enough, I will take my paw and move your face back. I’ve noticed how you can have two or three cats on your lap at one time, but when it’s me, it’s only me. I need all the space.

Speckles

So this is what you do. Don’t touch me. I’ll find you when I’m ready. I will find you every night and climb onto your shoulder, and then again every morning. And sometimes during the day I might come find you. But don’t touch me unless I touch you first. Then give me lots of pets on my head and back.

Moriah

Don’t pick me up. Don’t you dare.

Mattie

This is how you hug me, okay? You pick me up and put me over your left forearm and you bring your arm really close to your chest and then you let me put my paws on your right arm and you take your right hand and you pet me all however much you can reach like my head and my face and neck and shoulders and back and legs and reach over to get my tail and just walk around and keep petting me until I tell you to stop.

In Closing

If you have to be instructed on how to hug your cat, you haven’t been listening to them.

The Incredible Edible Egg

Unless you’re vegan, the egg could be a perfect part of your regular diet. Eggs are high in protein and are also a good source of other nutrients. From www.healthline.com comes this information: [An egg has] only 77 calories, with 5 grams of fat and 6 grams of protein with all 9 essential amino acids. Rich in iron, phosphorus, selenium and vitamins A, B12, B2 and B5 (among others). About 113 mg of choline, a very important nutrient for the brain.

The Most Popular American Egg Dishes

This site, again, related to the other two, has even more. Here are just a few.

  • Eggs Hussarde is a New Orleans dish that was originally made with poached eggs which have been placed on top of Holland rusks, red wine reduction sauce (Marchand de vin), and Canadian bacon. Finally, the concoction was topped with Hollandaise sauce.
  • Eggs Neptune is an American dish consisting of a split English muffin with crab meat, poached eggs, and Hollandaise sauce sandwiched in between. The dish is a variation on eggs Benedict, and crab meat is used as a replacement for ham or bacon. Eggs Neptune is traditionally served for breakfast, and it is especially popular on Father’s Day and Mother’s Day.
  • Creamed Eggs On Toast: Creamed eggs on toast is a traditional American dish that pairs eggs with white sauce over a piece of toast. Said to have its roots back in the Depression era, this dish typically consists of toasted slices of bread that are topped with a mixture of a creamy white sauce and chopped hard-boiled eggs.
  • Eggs Sardou: Originally invented at the famous Antoine’srestaurant in New Orleans, eggs Sardou is a Creole dish consisting of poached eggs, creamed spinach, Hollandaise sauce, and artichoke bottoms. The dish got its name after Victorien Sardou, a 19th-century French playwright who was staying in the city when the dish was invented.
  • Hangtown Fry: Possibly the very first Californian dish, named for its birthplace which is today known as Placerville, Hangtown fry was invented during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s. Legend has it that the dish originated at the famed El Doradohotel, when a miner, just having struck it rich, barged into a saloon demanding the most extravagant dish in the house.
  • Joe’s Special: Some say that this popular San Franciscan delicacy was invented by a San Francisco chef as an alternative to the Italian frittata, and others claim that it came to be when a starving musician ordered an omelet after hours but asked the chef to add something extra to the eggs.

Stuffed Medjool Dates

You don’t need to stuff a Medjool date in order to fall in love with it. But stuffing it can be oh, so satisfying!

Medjool dates are larger than regular dates, and they have a rich caramel-like flavor. They are soft and chewy and are rich in nutrients and anti-oxidents.

They are perfect for stuffing. Once you take out the pit, there is a huge gap that begs to be stuffed with something good!

How To Stuff A Date

  1. Carefully make an incision on one side.
  2. Pop out the pit.
  3. Open the date like a baked potato.
  4. Fill it with whatever you choose!
  5. Add toppings
  6. Sprinkle with salt.
  7. Top with optional sweetener (add a tiny drizzle of honey on a few).
  8. Drizzle with chocolate.

Suggestions For Stuffing

This site has several fun suggestions.

  • Rainbow Tiramisu Date: Roll the date in Turkish coffee and cocoa powder, fill it with honey-sweetened mascarpone, and top it with some rainbow sprinkles.
  • Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Date: Stuff the date with a pretzel nugget and dip the bottom and sides in chocolate. (vegan)
  • Nana’s Date: Stuff the date with a walnut piece and unsweetened coconut flakes, or roll it in sweetened coconut flakes. (vegan)
  • Baklava Date: Stuff the date with a walnut piece and pack a small pinch of cardamom, finely chopped pistachios, and (optional) edible dried rose petals into the rest of the space. (vegan)

Bacon Wrapped Dates With Goat Cheese

From this site comes a recipe for a simple 3-ingredient appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices bacon (thin works better)
  • 16 dates
  • 4 ounces goat cheese
  • toothpicks

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Slice the dates lengthwise on one side to create an opening. Remove the pit.
  3. Using a spoon, stuff a small amount of goat cheese into the cavity of each date and press the sides together to close.
  4. Cut the bacon slices in half. Wrap each date with a slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick.
  5. Arrange evenly on a baking sheet with raised edges (otherwise grease will get everywhere) and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the dates and use the toothpick to turn each one so it’s laying on its side. Bake for another 5-8 minutes, until browned to your liking, and turn the dates to the other side and repeat. Remove from the oven, place on a paper towel lined plate, and let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Suggestions

  • Take these to the next level by putting a little honey bourbon glaze on top. Just mix about 1/4 cup of honey with 1 tablespoon of bourbon and brush the mixture on the dates when they come right out of the oven.
  • For crispier, browned bacon, set the oven temperature at 375. For crispier bacon, bake longer. If the bacon is wrapping more than twice around the date, trim your bacon slices so they’re a little shorter. If the bacon layer is too thick, it won’t cook. Keep leftovers in the fridge.

Closing Suggestions

Make Ahead And Store

  • Stuffed dates can be made ahead of time and stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • To make ahead, simply cut your dates open and remove the pits. Add any nut butters or mix up your dairy-free cream cheese and fill each date.
  • Add the toppings right before serving.

Freeze Stuffed Dates

  • Place the dates on a single layer on a baking sheet and store in the freezer. Transfer to an airtight container with the lid for up to 3 months.

Thawing And Reheating

  • Transfer the dates from the freezer to the fridge 24 hours before you wish to serve. Sprinkle with toppings of choice.

Serving Suggestions

  • Lunchboxes or snack-plates
  • Cheeseboards
  • Game day or holiday parties as an appetizer

How Cats Age

My house is full of cats on every spectrum of cat age, from not-quite-a-kitten (now a human 2-year-old) to “super seniors” (defined as cats aged 15 or older).

I think we’ve mastered the How Cats Age stuff, but I will draw on several websites written by people smarter than me. The blog will end with a chart that will tell you how to define your cat in terms of human years.

And before we get into the mundane stuff of “facts,” let me just say that I love cats. I love every age of cats. I love kittens, teens, adults and geriatrics. They are all precious creatures.

Six Stages Of Aging

This site gives a short and sweet version of the six stages of aging. Cats, like humans, age at various rates depending on their health and environment. This is a general guideline. The chart at the end of the blog gives specific information about the ages of each stage.

Kitten: During the kitten stage, your cat will go through more physical and mental changes than at any other point in his life. With so much happening so quickly, it is important to focus on these things to ensure you have a well-balanced, friendly and confident adult cat:

  • Nutrition: Kittens have special dietary needs. Feeding high-quality nutrient-rich kitten food is recommended to help them grow into healthy adults. Kittens can be finicky so it is recommended different textures of food be used if they stop eating a food type they previously enjoyed.
  • Socialization: Exposing your kitten to different people and situations is necessary for them to grow into well-balanced adults and set a behavioral foundation. Desensitization to cars, vet exams and handling will prevent these situations from causing major stress in the future. Kittens often play rough and it is recommended to adopt them in pairs as their rough play can be too much for adult cats, dogs and humans.
  • Litterbox: Kittens should be trained to use a litterbox.

Junior (reproductively mature but still growing): Just like with humans, adolescence, or the junior stage, can be a challenging time for cats. Cats reach full size and have learned about life and how to survive in their environment. Many cats in the junior stage will experience:

  • Wandering: Junior cats who are not spayed/neutered have a tendency to wander as they search for a mate. Ideally, a cat is spayed or neutered as a kitten, but ensuring your cat is spayed/neutered by this stage will help prevent him from running away.
  • Litterbox: Now that the cat is full grown, it is important to ensure the litterbox is the appropriate size and being used properly. Any issues with proper use of the litterbox should be addressed immediately to prevent ongoing issues in the future.

Adult or Prime: Adult cats have established their basic temperament and personality. They don’t require as much time and supervision as a kitten. Still, there are a couple important considerations for an adult cat:

  • Behavior and activities: Your cat will not be quite as active as when he was a kitten, but he still needs enrichment in the form of regular exercise, mental stimulation and socialization.
  • Medical needs: Adult cats benefit from yearly veterinary visits. Special attention to proper weight and dental hygiene is needed to prevent problems as they age.

Mature: Cats in the mature stage are the human equivalent of 40-50 years old. Mature cats tend to be less active than adult cats. They may need special considerations based on physical issues. Yearly veterinary exams will help identify arthritis, weight or dental issues, which are more common in mature cats.

Senior: In their golden years, cats often sleep more, eat less and are not as active. Pay attention to these special considerations:

  • Medical needs: Lab work is typically done at the yearly veterinary visit. It will help the vet identify any underlying issues and maintain a baseline for your pet’s health.
  • Diet: Senior cats need fewer calories and less fat. Discuss dietary changes with your veterinarian.
  • Activity: Senior pets may need help getting around, especially accessing litterboxes so the height of the box may need to be adjusted. Challenges with sight and hearing are not uncommon.

Super Senior or Geriatric: Geriatric cats inevitably encounter medical issues. Veterinary exams two times a year are recommended at this stage. Keeping your pet as comfortable and healthy as possible is of upmost importance. While the geriatric stage can last years, be prepared to make difficult decisions about when it is time to say goodbye. Giving your pet the best care also means recognizing when he is suffering and putting his needs above your own to end that suffering.

The Everything Chart

I merge information from two websites, HERE and HERE that also outline the six life stages of cats.

I keep this age chart (comparing cat ages to human ages) handy all the time. It can be very illustrative.

Kitten 0 – 6 months: Your cat is full kitten, not sexually mature, and trying to process the massive amounts of information he’s taking in about the world. It’s a lot to deal with. All your kitten seems to want to do is play.

  • 0-1 month 0-1 year
  • 2 months 2 years
  • 3 months 4 years
  • 4 months 6 years
  • 5 months 8 years
  • 6 months 10 years

Junior or Teen 7 months – 1 year: The terrible “teens” of cat-hood. During this stage, your kitten is a full on nightmare, mouthing and grabbing at everything he can, challenging the humans in the house for dominance, and generally trying to show everyone he’s the boss of everything (an attitude he will probably maintain throughout his life, regardless of how dominant he proves to be).

  • 7 months 12 years

Adult 1 year – 2 years: By one, your cat is entering adulthood and developing all kinds of lifelong cat behaviors, like kneading, hissing, and hiding. He’s calming down a little from his full-on kitten stage, but he’s still got plenty of energy. He’s learning a lot right now and settling into his cat life.

  • 12 months 15 years
  • 18 months 21 years
  • 2 years 24 years

Prime Maturity 3 years – 6 years: From ages 3-6, your cat is in his prime. He’s learned the basics of catting and he’s settled into the personality and energy level that feel right for him.

  • 3 years 28 years
  • 4 years 32 years
  • 5 years 36 years
  • 6 years 40 years

Mature or Middle Age 7 years – 10 years: At this point, your cat has entered the kitty equivalent of middle age. He’s still got energy, but not quite as much as he did in his prime. You may notice that your cat starts to become particularly set in his ways—he might be much more resistant to any changes and might experience anxiety more often than he did in the past.

  • 7 years 44 years
  • 8 years 48 years
  • 9 years 52 years
  • 10 years 56 years

Senior 11 years – 14 years: Now, your cat is officially a senior citizen. He will likely start to experience a decline in health, including deteriorating vision and hearing and possible cognitive decline. Like older humans, your cat might be prone to “grumpiness,” and you might notice he gets irritated more easily than he used to.

  • 11 years 60 years
  • 12 years 64 years
  • 13 years 68 years
  • 14 years 72 years

Super Senior or Geriatric 15 years and older: After 15, cats are categorized as geriatric and need a lot more attention. Any behavioral changes will warrant a vet trip at this point and you can expect extreme lethargy and lots of naps.

  • 15 years 76 years
  • 16 years 80 years
  • 17 years 84 years
  • 18 years 88 years
  • 19 years 92 years
  • 20 years 96 years
  • 21 years 100 years
  • 22 years 104 years
  • 23 years 108 years
  • 24 years 112 years
  • 25 years 116 years
